Potpourri Essential Oil
If you want to make your own potpourri essential oil, there are many potpourri essential oil blends to choose from. Potpourri oils are nice because there are an endless variety of combinations that you can come up with. You will never become bored.
In the world of essential oils, the term potpourri refers combining various types of aromatic dried flower petals, herbs, or spices with one or more essential oils. The resulting aroma varies, of course, with the particular ingredients and essential oils chosen. But it usually results in providing a gentle pleasing scent to the surrounding area that will both relax and calm you.
What kinds of dried flower petals can you use and where can you get them? You can usually find them at local craft and hobby stores. If you're not afraid to order via the Internet, many of these stores also have online shops. If you are really industrious and patient, you can try making your own dried flower petals from flowers, spices, and scented leaves found in your backyard garden.
Potpourri is not just a natural way to bring aromatic smells into your home year-round. Potpourri essential oils also are non toxic, chemical free, and friendly to the environment. Plus it's a perfect fun craft project for you and your kids to do together and not too difficult to make.
You can keep the essential oil potpourri for yourself or you can give them away as personalized gifts.
Potpourri recipes can be complex or simple. Here's a typical recipe from wikihow.com, but half of the fun of making your own potpourri is substituting different ingredients for ones of your own choosing - so feel free to substitute and experiment with fragrances of your own.
In a large pot or bowl, combine the following ingredients:
- 8 cups of any of the following, or a combination of: lemon leaves, lemon verbena, lemon-scented tea-tree, lemon thyme, lemon-scented geranium (pelargonium), and/or lemon grass
- 1 cup eau-de-cologne mint
- 1 cup calendula petals
- 1/2 cup each orange and lemon peel
- 1 cup allspice, crushed lightly
- 1 cup fixative
- 6-8 drops lemon verbena oil
- 3-4 drops bergamot oil
Cover the bowl or pot with a tight fitting cover in a dark room for about 6 weeks which will give the flavors time to mesh and meld together. Now you can place the potpourri in a potpourri container which will allow the scents to be released into the room. Add your favorite essential oil blends to it and refresh or reactivate the fragrance every 2 to 3 months as needed.
After you make your first potpourri essential oil batch, don't be surprised if you become hooked on it. Before too long, you'll find yourself totally immersed in creating your own personal blends.
